Wesmart Blog - Healthy habits for you and your family-01

Adopting healthy habits is a difficult task but it has many rewards, including a longer life expectancy. Here are a few simple habits that you can incorporate into your family life that can improve your overall health and quality of life.

1. Eat slowly

Studies have proven that faster eaters are more likely to be overweight than their slow eating counterparts. This could be because the brain sends signals to the body that it’s full and that process could take up to 20 minutes. By this time, a fast eater may already be done with their meal! This explains that post-meal bloat that often hits after eating. Eat slower and observe the difference it will make on your plate.

2. Read nutritional labels

It may not seem like the most interesting thing to read but reading nutritional labels helps you to avoid misleading marketing labels like ”high in calcium”, or “zero sugar”. A certain food item may be high in certain vitamins or nutrients, but it can also be simultaneously high in sugar or fat — a detail you might overlook if you don’t read the nutritional label.

3. Eat more fruits and vegetables

A health survey of more than 65,000 participants found that people who ate the most portions of fruits or vegetables (7 or more) each day had a 42% reduced risk of premature death compared to individuals who ate less than one portion a day. Bear in mind that fresh fruits and vegetables are generally healthier than their canned and frozen counterparts.

4. Exercise at least three times a week

The average adult should exercise for at least 150 minutes a week. Take this as an opportunity to find a fun activity that you can do with the whole family like walking, swimming or simply playing games outside on a regular basis. That way, you can bond with the family while getting some exercise.

5. Sleep 6 – 8 hours a day

Sleep is important because it allows the body to repair itself and getting enough rest may also help prevent excess weight gain, heart disease and decrease the duration of illness.
